Long ago, mighty King Sagara sent his sixty thousand sons to retrieve his sacred ashvamedha horse, but they angered the great Sage Kapila, who turned them into ashes. Their souls were left in torment, and only the sacred waters of the River Ganga, which flowed in the heavens, could bring them peace. King Sagara’s grandson, Prince Bhagiratha, took on the enormous task of bringing Ganga down to earth to wash away the ashes and free their souls.
With unwavering determination, Bhagiratha performed difficult penances, winning the favour of the gods Brahma and Shiva. But how did he convince them to help him? And how did the powerful Ganga descend from the heavens without causing destruction to the earth below?
