Bhai Dooj: Celebrating Sibling Love!

The roots of Bhai Dooj are intertwined with ancient legends, one of which tells the story of Yamraj, the god of death, and his sister Yami (Yamuna). Legend has it that Yami warmly welcomed her brother Yamraj with tilak, aarti (lighting of lamps), and a delicious meal when he visited her after a long separation. Touched by her affection and hospitality, Yamraj blessed Yami with immortality and declared that any brother who receives aarti and tilak from his sister on this day will be blessed with a long life and prosperity.

On Bhai Dooj, the festivities begin with sisters preparing their homes with rangolis, colourful decorations made with powdered rice, to welcome their brothers. Inside, they light lamps and adorn the house with flowers, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The heart of the celebration lies in the loving rituals performed by sisters for their brothers. They apply tilak on their brothers' foreheads, symbolising their blessings and protection. Sisters then offer sweets and homemade dishes, tempting their brothers with treats that celebrate their bond.

For brothers, Bhai Dooj is a time to express their love and gratitude to their sisters. They shower them with gifts, ranging from traditional sweets and clothes to modern gadgets and accessories, showing appreciation for their sisters' love and care throughout the year.
